Teknik penyambungan logam yang paling sering kita pakai adalah pengelasan. Secara keilmuan, teori pengelasan diplejari di kampus teknik jurusan teknik material ataupun teknik mesin. Organisasi profesi di Indonesia di bidang pengelasan adalah Asosiasi Pengelasan Indonesia atau disingkat dengan nama API. Para profesonal dan akademis saling mendukung dalam pengembangan ilmu pengelasan dan penerapan di industri. Berikut ini jenis-jenis pengelasan yang sering kita jumpai di industri:

 

Arc welding

Setiap organisasi profesi di bidang pengelasan mempunyai Code ataupun Standard yang berbeda dalam memberi nama jenis pengelasan serta pengelompokan yang berbeda. Di negara Amerika punya standard berbeda dengan di Jepang ataupun Eropa. Seabagi contoh, pengelasan GTAW kadang dikenal dengan istilah TIG.
